Psychiatric Disorders

A psychiatric disorder is a major disturbance in an individual’s thinking, feelings, or behavior that reflects a problem in mental function. Common examples are anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorders, and substance use disorders. About 1 in 4 adults and almost as many adolescents suffer from psychiatric illness at some point in their lives. In the past, the subject of mental illness was surrounded by mystery and fear. Today, there has been major progress in the understanding of and ability to treat psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately, signs of psychiatric disorders often go unnoticed, and those who would most benefit from treatment do not receive it. For this reason, it is important to seek professional help from psychiatric experts who can diagnose and offer effective treatments. Psychiatric disorders are treatable, and patients do recover and function normally.
